An Instructional Assistant (IA) is a graduate student who serves an auxiliary role to the faculty member, but who does not serve as a primary instructor. Appropriate duties of the Instructional Assistant might include:
a. Locate and prepare materials or activities relevant to the teaching of a topic related to a writing assignment;
b. Confer with or “coach” individual students to help them formulate topics for essays and generate appropriate bibliographic sources;
c. Review outlines and/or rough drafts for coherence, clarity of purpose, argument, and other “global” concerns;
d. Design assignments for the course, particularly those that focus on teaching writing;
e. Lead peer-review sessions among students;
f. Evaluate and grade written assignments such as essays, lab reports, research papers, and provide appropriate feed-back (not simply editing) with an eye toward substantive revision;
g. Grade homework assignments and exams, in consultation with the faculty member of record;
h. Lead discussion sections for larger courses;
i. Hold office hours to consult with individual students.
The amount of work expected of an IA is scaled according to the number of students in the course. The IA should NOT be asked to do more than one-half of the grading and evaluation for a WID course.

New Procedures for IAs
1) IA's contact information must be on course syllabus
2) IA must be introduced to the class sometime during the first two weeks of class
3) Faculty and IA must meet at least THREE times during the semester. The first meeting will discuss the IA's role; the second to check in about IA's work, the third meeting will be to discuss and reflect upon the semester.
4) Fall IA requests must be submitted by April 1st. Spring IA requests must be submitted by November 15th
* Please note that the professor will be responsible for supplying the TA with an office space if office hours are required.
