Below is a summary of the research resources and instructional options that the GWU librarians have recommended for WID courses. These are highly recommended, as they will benefit both you and your students in any research-related endeavors:
INSTRUCTION OPTIONS FOR WID COURSES
Note: It is highly recommended that you use the Library Instruction Request Form ( www.gelman.gwu.edu/services/library-instruction/library-instruction-request-form ) or contact Debbie Gaspar at 202-994-1333 or gaspar@library.gwu.edu at least two weeks in advance to allow for class preparation and discussion of session objectives.
Formal Instruction
Instruction Sessions
A librarian conducts a class session based on the research needs of your students, generally in an classroom in Gelman or Eckles Libraries. A successful session:
• Links to a specific assignment at the time your students begin their research, which increases student motivation and learning.
• Includes the faculty member, whose presence stresses the importance of research instruction and enriches student learning.
• Grows out of the class assignment, syllabus, and collaboration between the faculty member and the librarian.
Class Visit
A librarian visits your course to participate in discussion about student research projects and potential sources.
Informal Instruction
Open Research Lab
Students work on their research projects in a Gelman or Eckles Library computer lab with a librarian available for individual consultation. Scheduling the open lab at a critical moment in the students’ research process encourages their engagement and reinforces the usefulness of the session.
Small Group Research Assistance
A librarian meets with groups of 3-5 students at a critical moment in their research. Students learn most when they attend these appointments voluntarily.
Ask a Librarian
Students visit or phone the reference desk, instant message GelmanInfo, or email a librarian for research help when they need it. This option allows students to determine when and if they need a librarian’s. (This does not require prior scheduling.)
Virtual Instruction
Blackboard Research Guides
A librarian creates an electronic guide or guides to databases and other sources relevant to their assignments and the course. The guide may also include step-by-step instruction on a specific database or other research tips and tricks.
See “Slavery & Freedom” research guide: libguides.gwu.edu/slavery
Blackboard Bulletin Boards
A librarian participates in discussion about research topics, processes, and/or sources on a discussion board in Blackboard.
Faculty/GTA Consultation (Virtual or In-person)
A librarian collaborates with the faculty member or GTA on research assignments to clarify possible sources of information and potential roadblocks.
Writing Research
For a guide to finding and publishing research on the teaching of writing, see Rhet/Comp and Writing Studies research guide for UW and WID faculty: libguides.gwu.edu/uwp
