Some student writers (particularly first-year writers) will struggle with the rhetorical moves expected of them in academic writing. Modeling such moves can be an extremely effective way to improve student writing. Attached to this post is an example handout, developed by Profs. Eric Drown and Rachel Riedner for a UW20 class, that demonstrates certain rhetorical moves frequently used in academic writing. This handout, or one similar, could be used to set up an assignment or other activity centered on the effective use of academic language.
